April Issue 2008

Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, Features Works by Robert Delford Brown

Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Robert Delford Brown: Meat, Maps and Militant Metaphysics, on view through Aug. 3, 2008.

The exhibition is Brown's first museum exhibition following an active career of 50 years. He was in the vanguard of many major art movements following his arrival in New York in 1959, including Performance Art, Fluxus, Pop Art, Happenings and Correspondence art. Brown continues to defy barriers and expectations as he prepares his first museum exhibition at the age of 77, when many of his peers settle into the slower pace of retirement.

Through his early career, Brown encountered, communicated and collaborated with many of the 20th century's most avant garde artist, while pursuing his own art-making practices designed to promote humanity, environmental and social responsibility. His art provided a vehicle for more positive human interaction through collaborative, creative endeavor.

Brown was born in Colorado in 1930, later moving to California where he received his BA (1952) and MA (1958) from UCLA. In 1959, Brown moved to New York City where he lived and worked for the next 40 years. The artist currently lives and works in both New York City and Wilmington.

The exhibition will include a catalogue designed and edited by guest curator Mark Bloch. Related public programs (artist talks, films, readings) will be presented throughout the exhibition.
