Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features
Works by Kathy Sosa
Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Huipiles: A Celebration from the Smithsonian, featuring works by Kathy Sosa, on view from Apr. 11 - 30, 2008.
This fabulous series comes from the Mexican Cultural Institute at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. The purpose of the Huipiles exhibition is to celebrate the hand woven and embroidered garments produced in the Mayan Tradition in Mexico and Latin America.
Influenced by Modigliani and Matisse, Kathy Sosa's paintings celebrate the various ways huipiles are enjoyed by women in the US. A student of the renowned portrait artist Nelson Shanks, Sosa is known for her mixed media portraiture - collage of oils and interior textiles and wallpapers. Sosa was commissioned by the Texas Conference of Women to paint design icon Martha Stewart and she presented it to her personally.
Shain Gallery located in the heart of Myers Park in Charlotte, has been on the forefront of the Charlotte art scene, since opening their doors in 1998. The gallery represents many regional and national artists.
