Charleston Renaissance Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibit of Works by West Fraser

Long recognized as the eminent interpreter of Charleston's city life and the surrounding Lowcountry landscape, West Fraser will be the subject of a forthcoming monograph published by the University of South Carolina Press. A new exhibit of Charleston genre scenes and plein air landscapes anticipates the book's release. West Fraser Paints Charleston, featuring twenty recent canvases, opens on May 5 at the Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Charleston, SC. The exhibit will contiune through June 30.

GNS Grocery

A number of local-and legendary-landmarks are represented in the upcoming show. GNS Grocery (oil on panel, 20 x 24 inches) immortalizes Charleston's corner grocery store tradition, as does Reconstruction 2000 (oil on panel. 16 x 20 inches). A larger linen canvas portrays a milk cellar on the grounds of McLeod Plantation (Milk Cellar, oil on linen, 30 x 36 inches), while View to Charleston County (oil on linen, 25 x 30 inches) captures the natural beauty found along the Edisto River. In Cool January A.M. with Three Churches (oil on linen, 22 x 26 inches), Charleston's "Holy City" moniker is reinforced by a trio of church steeples in the winter sky.

This exhibit serves as a precursor to the lavishly illustrated, large-format book now in production at the University of South Carolina Press. Charleston In My Time: The Paintings of West Fraser is scheduled for release in the autumn of 2001 and will feature more than 150 color plates. An introductory essay by Angela Mack, Curator of Collections at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, will examine the development of landscape painting in Charleston from the eighteenth century through the present, thereby placing Fraser in historical context. A biographical essay by Charleston attorney and author Ted Phillips will focus on Fraser's personal history and artistic philosophy. A companion exhibition highlighting a selection of the artist's most memorable works will travel to several of the region's leading institutions, including the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA, and the Greenville County (SC) Museum of Art throughout 2001-2002.

West Fraser is represented exclusively by the Charleston Renaissance Gallery.
