Greensboro, NC, Artist Crafts Original and
Custom Fine Furniture
by Leslie Newby
Chris Horney began his company, Maker of Things, when he realized he had not only an interest but also an affinity for working with wood. The former painter turned his attention to producing beautiful furniture after refining his self-taught skills at Rockingham, NC's Fine Woodworking program. Since then, he has produced many original and custom designs that have sold through galleries or directly to individuals.
After April shows at 2ArtChicks gallery and the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in downtown Greensboro, Horney is preparing to exhibit at the prestigious Philadelphia Furniture and Furnishings Show held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center May 12-14. Among the 250 juried artisans selected from across the nation, Horney will feature several pieces of Shaker inspired hand crafted furniture. He supports the Shaker philosophy to build with function and form in unity and his designs reflect simplicity and beauty in every detail. Simple forms may be embellished with curved elements, inlays or marquetry, exposed hand cut dovetails, beading around drawer fronts, or heavily figured woods. The self-taught woodworker has built many custom and one of a kind pieces in his local studio.
Attended by "consumers, collectors, designers, and architects", the Philadelphia Furniture and Furnishings Show is acclaimed as "the country's finest exhibition and sale of hand-made objects for the home and office." The show was founded by two furniture makers from Philadelphia and has gained momentum over the past six years for its consistent offering of unique and beautifully crafted items. A jury of established craftsmen determines who will be featured in May by reviewing artisan submissions from throughout the nation. The show features furniture, lighting, textile designs, ceramics, glass, metals and more. Additional information regarding the show may be obtained by contacting Amy Morais at 215/440-0718 or by accessing their web site at (http://www.pffshow.com).
In addition to the original designs, Horney features, he also creates unique items for his patrons. One antique watch collector requested an elaborate display case for his many beautiful pocket watches, while others have desired functional pieces for their homes customized to fit the available space. With every project, Horney uses the same philosophy of design to produce beautiful and useful furniture intended for enjoyment now and in generations to come.
