Quilt National '99
For more than 20 years the biennial Quilt National show and traveling exhibits have provided quilters and fiber enthusiasts with a rich source of pleasure and inspiration. Quilt National 1999's judges chose 84 quilts from 1321 entries from 637 artists from 20 countries around the world. Thirteen countries are represented, making the 1999 show a truly international collection.
The Quilt National '99 quilts are beautiful reflections of where the art quilt has been - and where it is going. Jurors for the '99 show were renowned quilters Nancy Crow and Caryl Bryer Fallert and Bruce Pepich, director of the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts. They have shaped a diverse and exciting exhibit that bears witness to the strength of the creative energies of the world's artists.
The southeast has a number of artists represented in the '99 show. Three are from North Carolina - Hollis Chatelain, Ann Harwell, and Sherri Wood. Elizabeth Barton and Vita Marie Lovett are from Georgia. Ardyth Davis is from Virginia. Florida has several artists represented - Eleanor A. McCain, Maya Schonenberger, and Fran Skiles.
The Charlotte Quilters' Guild and the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, will bring Section A of the Quilt National '99, featuring 25 of these outstanding quilts to the Charlotte region from May 16 to July 30. This is the first time that a "Quilt National" exhibit has been brought to this region which is surprising, given the extensive role textiles have played in the economy of the region.
