Major Photo Show Opens at Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC
The highlight of the spring season at the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, is the third Upstairs Photography Biennial: An Exhibition of Art Photography from the Carolinas, opening May 19 and continuing through June 17, 2000. The juried show is for photographers living or working in North and South Carolina and presents a comprehensive creative vision in the photographic medium.
Forty photographers and more than 70 photographic images have been chosen for an exhibition noted for talent and diversity. Exciting and at times extraordinary, subjects run the gamut from representational to abstract and documentary to aesthetic. The wide range of techniques extends from traditional photography to newer digital processes and hand manipulation. Many of the photographers at the Upstairs are well established; others are emerging artists.
The judges for this year's show were Diane Hopkins-Hughs, Greenville, SC, and Alice Sebrell, Asheville, NC. Both women are esteemed photographers with long-standing professional associations with the art form.
Cash prizes totalling $1,000 will be awarded
to first, second and third place winners along with two awards
of merit. Rebecca Stockham, Greenville, SC, was the first place
recipient in 1998; Robert Poe, Greenwood, SC, won in 1996.
A lavish reception to meet the artists is planned for Fri., May
19 from 5-7pm. The prize winners will be announced at this time.
On Sun., May 21 at 3pm, the gallery will sponsor a tour of the
exhibition with an educational lecture on the photography.
