Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC, Features 2001 Sculpture Invitational Exhibit

The 2001 Sculpture Invitational has opened at Blue Spiral 1, in Asheville, NC. The exhibition will continue through June 23, 2001.

The 2001 Sculpture Invitational encompasses a fusion of styles and media explored through an array of innovative techniques. The artists represented intrepidly investigate the aesthetic and conceptual properties of their selected materials. Exhibited works will range in scale from the intimate tiles of ceramic artist Kathy Triplett to the monumental steel sculptures of Hoss Haley. Whether you are interested in highly ornate functional pieces like Susan Hutchinson's Music Stand or are simply looking for an extraordinary item to augment an outdoor sculpture garden, this exhibition offers a selection of objects as distinguished as the tastes of our collectors.

Artists participating in the 2001 Sculpture Invitational include Junichiro Baba, Elizabeth Brim, Rick Brunner, Shane Fero, Robert Gardner, Hoss Haley, Susan Hutchinson, Keith Jennings, Stoney Lamar, Robert Levin, Damon MacNaught, George Peterson, Louise Radochonski, John Ransmeier, Sally Rogers, Virginia Scotchie, David Sengel, Randy Shull, Brent Skidmore, Jack R. Slentz, Monica Tinker, and Kathy Triplett.

Daniel Essig

Book artist Daniel Essig is also exhibiting a suite of new works in Gallery 3. These labor-intensive sculptural books serve as a decorative chamber for various small scale found objects. Essig's constructions utilize a medieval aesthetic whose process-oriented exterior provides a visual diary of the journey made by the artist's own hand. The resulting works are visually elegant and indicative of the artist's love for his materials.

The Showcase Gallery featured artist for the month of May is printmaker Art Werger. The artist's technically astounding mezzotints are a poignant record of the humorous, private and curious moments in the lives of the individuals they portray. These prints range in focus from subtle moments of light on the human figure to panoramic city vistas that monumentalize the urban landscape.
