Carter Memorial Shows Works by Joan Brown & Paul Genet in Charleston, SC

The Charleston Artist Guild is pleased to announce that the Third Annual Patricia O. Carter Memorial Exhibition will take place in Charleston, SC's City Hall during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, from May 25 through June 8. Featured artists are Joan Brown and Paul Genet. The City of Charleston, Office of Cultural Affairs, is co-sponsoring this exhibition.

The Memorial Exhibition was established to recognize the artwork of physically challenged adult artists in the Lowcountry region and is offered in memory of Patricia O. Carter, an oil painter and Charleston Artist Guild member whose dedication to painting helped her cope with the devastating effects of Lupus for a long period of time.

Joan Brown was born in Charleston, graduated from the University of South Carolina and taught school for a number of years. She raised a family of three and moved a number of times with her husband in connection with his Navy career. Brown had some exposure to art as a youngster, but did not really take up art until she encountered severe depression requiring hospitalization several years ago. She recognized that she was experiencing significant problems and sought professional help for her illness. During her hospitalization, Brown tried art therapy and became intensely involved. She found that painting helped her to release bottled-up emotions and restore a sense of values as well as develop creative insights into the world around her. Her primary medium is pastel.

Paul Genet recently moved to Charleston from Charlotte, NC. He was born in Greeneville, SC, and attended NC State and the University of South Carolina. For a number of years he owned and managed a corporate advertising agency in Charlotte. A disabling accident several years ago radically changed Genet's life. He now gets about in a wheel chair.

Genet had painted since his youth, but art took on a much greater significance for him as he learned to cope with the sudden loss of mobility following his accident. He took up painting as a new career. It has allowed him to regain a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. Genet says that art for him was "finding my life again." He works in oil and other media and concentrates on coastal and marine scenes.
