Jereld Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Kesler Woodward of Alaska/Carolinas

Paintings from opposite corners of the continent will be featured in an exhibition titled, Kesler Woodward, North and South, on view at Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, through June 9, 2001. The exhibition features landscapes of Alaska and the Carolinas by an artist who grew up in Aiken, SC, and has spent most of his adult life as an artist, art professor, curator and art historian in Alaska.

Organized in cooperation with The Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA, the exhibition spotlights Woodward's most recent works. A full-color exhibition catalogue has been published featuring an essay by Frank Soos, a recent winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, and longtime friend and associate of the artist. The publication is available through Jerald Melberg Gallery.

Kesler Woodward received the BA degree from Davidson College in North Carolina in 1973 and the MFA from Idaho State University in 1977. He joined the art faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1982, becoming professor emeritus in 2000. He has exhibited widely, and his works are in numerous public and corporate collections on both East and West coasts.

For over eighteen years, Woodward has been making paintings dealing with ideas about the land and the human relationship to it. Recognizing the peculiar attachment both Southerners and Alaskans have with the land, the artist combines what he sees with the emotional force behind a landscape. In this exhibition, Woodward presents recent images of the Alaskan forested interior, and for the first time in many years, an interpretation of the landscapes of his Southern roots. Frank Soos' essay in the exhibition catalogue details the artist's approaches to two very different settings.
