2001 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition in Charleston, SC

The City of Charleston, Office of Cultural Affairs is sponsoring the 2001 Piccolo Spoleto Festival Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition titled The Missing World featuring the work of over 50 SC contemporary artists on view May 19 through June 9, 2001.

The exhibit will be held at the historic Old City Jail, located in the heart of Charleston, SC. Constructed over 200 years ago, the jail has been vacant for over 60 years and remains one of the most significant examples of Gothic Style construction in the South. This venue will provide over 6000 square feet of exhibition space inside the Old Jail housing 65 works of art in all mediums including 4 art installations. The yard of the jail will provide space for 4 more installations. Three of the outdoor installations will receive honorariums for building artist designed tents. Winning designs for tent proposals were Loren Schwerd, Stephen Smeltzer, both of Charleston and Beth Melton of Rock Hill, SC. Other exhibiting artists include Mary Edna Fraser, Aaron Baldwin, Honor Marks, John Duckworth, Mike Lavine, Aram Stith and Anna Keck. All work is for sale.

The exhibit is coordinated by Print Studio South (PSS), a non profit community based arts organization dedicated to educating artists and the public about fine art prints and printmaking techniques. Print Studio South has been located at 77 Wentworth Street, downtown Charleston since 1992. Included in "The Missing World" will be a PSS members show featuring contemporary print work curated by the Piccolo committee.

The juror for The Missing World is Ce Scott. Scott is a multi media artist as well as the Director of Operations and Artists Services for the Tryon Center in Charlotte, NC. She has a BFA from Wayne State University in printmaking and a MEA from the Mars Land Institute in installation. Scott has exhibited widely throughout the southeast and is represented in the collections of the Afro American Cultural Center, Spirit Square in Charlotte and Davidson College, Davidson, NC. The coordinator of this event is PSS staff person, Kim Alsbrooks. Program director is Charleston artist, Art Thomas.

An awards presentation will be held at the Old City Jail, May 19 from 5 - 8pm. In recognition of The Old City jail as the future home of The School of The Building Arts (SOBA), 20% of the proceeds from sales will benefit SOBA as well as PSS.
