Summerville, SC, Presents Sculpture in the South 2001
Would you like to meet the sculptor with artwork in the permanent collection at Buckingham Palace? He'll be the quick-witted Texan named Garland Weeks in the black cowboy hat. Or are you interested in meeting Spirit, (the 9 foot signature sculpture of the National Museum of Women's History) and her creator, Alyse Lucas Corcoran, of Atlanta? You can meet these and other artists May 19 and 20 in Historic Summerville, SC, when nationally known sculptors present their works at Sculpture in the South 2001. From miniature to monumental, cowboys to confederate generals, ballet dancers to scampering otters, you'll find lively variety among works by artists renowned in the field.
Robert Allison
Other attending sculptors include Texans Richard Thompson, currently at work on the commissioned life-size sculpture, Pioneer Woman, for a Texas college, and Don Ray, known for his historical sculpture of the West. You won't want to miss Virginian, Allen Weidhaas, creator of the young Jeb Stuart Memorial and William McCullough of the Atlanta area. South Carolina sculptors include Robert Allison of Columbia and Charleston's Chris Gabriel, with his reptiles and amphibians.
Part of Sculpture in the South's mission is
the creation of a collection of permanent outdoor sculpture in
Summerville's public realm. The first piece of sculpture, Hop
To It by Colorado sculptor Kim Shaklee, was purchased and
installed in Summerville's Azalea Park in 1999. The second piece,
a bronze yellow Labrador retriever by sculptor Sandy Proctor,
was purchased in 2000. The third sculpture, Follow the Leader,
by Sandy Proctor, is the goal of the present fund-raising.
