Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Richard Stenhouse & Dirk Bach

Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, announces the opening of a two-person exhibit for NC artist Richard Stenhouse and Rhode Island artist Dirk Bach. The exhibition will run through May 18. Both artists are exceptional draftsman.

Richard Stenhouse

Richard Stenhouse explores the self-portrait in his newest drawings. His collection portrays himself as assumed personas from various periods in history. These skillfully drawn images give us multiple perspectives of the artist in his unique style on paper and mylar.

Stenhouse is a NC native. He studied architecture at the North Carolina State University School of Design, and received a BA in Visual Arts from UNC-Charlotte. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received his MFA.

Stenhouse has participated in over sixty group and solo exhibitions, establishing a regional & national following. Included among these are exhibitions at the Duke University Museum of Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, the Asheville Museum of Art, and the Palazzo Venezia in
Rome, Italy.

This is Stenhouse's seventh joint exhibit at Somerhill Gallery, where he has been represented for over 19 years. Numerous collections including the NC Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Art, the Greenville (NC) Museum of Art, the NC Art Society, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Duke University Museum of Art, NC State University, and Davidson College contain works by Stenhouse.

In 1996, Stenhouse was honored with a NC Arts Council Fellowship Grant. Viewers will note each artists strong architectural draftsmanship heritage.

Dirk Bach

An extensive selection of large scale drawings by Dirk Bach also adorns the South Gallery. Using graphite and colored pencils coupled with subtle shading techniques, Bach creates different moods in each of his works. With careful juxtapositions of his subjects along with a skillful rendering of his pencil, Bach produces visually stimulating images articulated by canting rays of light.

Bach was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He received his BFA and his MA at Colgate University. He also received an MA at the University of Denver and was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan.

Bach has been involved in many exhibitions throughout the country as well as abroad. Some of his more notable group shows include the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI; Susan Cummins Gallery in Mill Valley, CA; Seasons Gallery in Den Haag, Netherlands; and the Newport Art Museum in Newport, RI. Bach has also been involved in several solo shows. Among these are exhibits at Owen/Patrick Gallery in Philadelphia, PA; Watson Gallery in Norton, MA; Art Center at Salve Regina College in Newport, RI, and Schocket Gallery in Newport, RI.

Bach's work is represented in many public collections. These include the Rhode Island School of Design; Tucson Art center in Tucson, AZ; and the Denver Art Museum in Denver, CO.

This is the first feature exhibit for Bach at Somerhill Gallery. Although many will recognize the Bach name as Somerhill has represented Carolyn Morris Bach (Dirk's wife), for several years.
