UNC-TV Airs Documentary On Stanton Macdonald-Wright
30-Minute Video Surveys the Artist's Career and Assesses the Importance
of the Museum's Exhibition
The North Carolina Museum of Art and UNC-TV have co-produced the 30-minute documentary Color, Myth, and Music: Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Synchromism exploring the life and career of the American painter featured in the Museum's exhibition of the same name. The documentary premiered on Wed., Apr. 4, on UNC-TV, with additional showings through July.
"This documentary provides viewers the opportunity to learn about the man behind the artwork," said Museum Director Lawrence J. Wheeler. "Macdonald-Wright was an important figure in Paris before the start of the first World War and then for several years in New York before moving to Southern California, where he had a nearly unparalleled influence on the development of modern art in that area. This video explores each period of Macdonald-Wright's career and reexamines his important place in the history of 20th-century American art."
The documentary includes interviews with Wheeler and with exhibition co-curators John W. Coffey, the Museum's associate director of collections, and Will South, curator of collections at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Also interviewed are Christopher Knight, art critic for The LA Times; friends of the artists and collectors of his work, and one of Macdonald-Wright's students from his years teaching at UCLA
