Vitrum Gallerie in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Kate Dwyer

Vitrum Gallerie in Asheville, NC, is featuring, Departures: From North Carolina/Beyond Glass, an exhibition of paintings and prints on glass and other materials. The exhibition will be on view from May 4 through May 31, 2001.

Vitrum Gallerie is proud to announce an exciting collection of new works by Kate Dwyer. The title of Departures refers both to Dwyer's upcoming departure from North Carolina to Port Townsend, WA, and to the departures in her work from her well-known reverse glass paintings.

Focusing on faces and the figurative, twenty new glass paintings are more abstract than earlier works, but are still moody and evocative. The titles frequently reflect Dwyer's direct influences, such as Starting with Matisse or Starting in Picasso. Other works included in Departures are a group of paintings on tarpaper possessing a wood block-like quality, a group of "accidental monoprints" resulting from the blotting process used in the production of glass paintings, and small, landscape-inspired paintings on manipulated foam board.

This exhibition is an opportunity for Dwyer to challenge her familiar "backward" style of reverse painting by painting "frontwards", a term she jokingly uses to describe these more traditional works. Yet she prefers reverse painting, for it enables her to develop various processes that mimic other media while still retaining and utilizing the unique qualities of glass.

Dwyer began painting in 1991 and is basically self-taught. She finds inspiration in early Modernists, Primitivists, German Expressionists and icons. Inventing her own techniques, Dwyer creates her reverse glass paintings using a variety of printing and painting practices. She works the pieces horizontally over a mirror in order to see what occurs on the front of the glass. Dwyer says she enjoys the dynamics at work in her methods of reverse painting, such as blind accident and control, speed and delicacy, and the upside down and backward.
