May Issue 2001
Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC, Features Recent Acquisitions and Works by MFA Students
This May, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC, will present an exhibition of selected works acquired by gift or purchase during the past five years and an exhibition of works by UNC-Greensboro MFA students. Cool and Collected Recent Contemporary Acquisitions opens May 13 in Gallery 7 and continues through Sept. 2, 2001. MFA 2001 will be presented in the Falk and Tannenbaum Galleries from May 6 through June 10, 2001.
Included in Cool and Collected will be approximately seventy works representing important concepts and practices in contemporary art from the past fifteen to twenty years.
The exhibition demonstrates the Weatherspoon's
continuing commitment to the art of its time. Since the time of
such early acquisitions as Willem de Kooning's, Woman,
and the gift of Matisse prints and bronzes from avant garde collectors,
Etta and Claribel Cone, the Weatherspoon's collection has been
marked by an adventurous spirit and willingness to champion the
work of both established and emerging artists.
The Weatherspoon boasts one of the largest modern and contemporary
art collections in the South, one that is well known to artists,
curators, scholars, and collectors across the country. The collection
has developed as a result of the great generosity of many donors
who have given both works of art and acquisition funds.
Included in this exhibition will be a great variety of works in
many forms and media - from Alison Saar's sculpture, Compton
Nocturne, and Linda Besemer's Fold #8: Baroquesy, a
painting made only of paint - to two ephemeral sculptures by Ann
Hamilton and the boldly painted narrative of Robert Colescott's
Visit from Uncle Charlie. Seeing the works together will
provide the visitor with an opportunity to consider the practice
of collecting - an oftentimes invisible part of a museum's operation.
Among the generous donors who continue to help build the Weatherspoon's
collection are the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation, the Dillard
Fund, Hudson, Sarah-Ann and Werner K. Kramarsky, the Frances Stern
Lowenstein and Judy Proctor Acquisition Funds, Anthony T. Podesta,
Peter and Eileen Norton, and the many contributors to the Benefactors
Fund.
An exhibition highlighting the work of seven
graduating MFA students in the UNCG Department of Art will be
presented in the Falk and Tannenbaum Galleries. The exhibition
will include a variety of media, including painting, drawing,
sculpture, digital printmaking, and video installation.
MFA 2001 represents the final requirement in the graduate
program in the Department of Art and provides candidates with
the opportunity to present a consistent body of work to Weatherspoon
audiences. MFA candidates whose work will appear in the exhibition
include: Traci Davis, Elizabeth Depew, Kevin Muertens, Scott Raines,
Josh Rickards, Sean Robertson, and Shelley Tippett.
