Portraits in Sculpture Show Opens at Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC
A Perfect Likeness: Portraits in Sculpture has opened at Brookgreen Gardens in Pawley's Island, SC, in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion. The exhibit which continues through Aug. 18, featuring 36 finely sculpted examples of people in various situations from ice skating to dancing to sitting on the Supreme Court.
Examples from the past along with portraits of prominent individuals from contemporary sculptors comprise the exhibition. A bronzed Mark Twain sits at the entrance of the exhibit in a casual pose, arm draped over a park bench, seemingly inviting a chat or the sharing of a joke.
Twenty of the sculpted likenesses are from the Brookgreen collection; the remaining 16 are borrowed from museums, galleries and private collectors.
Busts of Pope John Paul II, Winston Churchhill
and Patricia Neal are identifiable in an instant, whereas others
may not be.
"Portraiture offers a variety of approaches in depicting
the human figure," said Curator of Sculpture Robin Salmon.
"A Perfect Likeness addresses the methods of interpretation
as well as the desired results of sculptors such as Marc Mellon,
Leonda Finke, Charles Parks, Richard Blake, Harriet Hyatt Mayor
and others."
Some of the works included are Camille Claudel, Martha Graham,
Virginia Woolf and Georgia O'Keefe by Leonda Finke; Anna Vaughn
Hyatt by Harriet Hyatt Mayor; Bali Dancer by Malvina Hoffman;
Jim McClellan by George Demetrios; Winston Churchill, George Bush,
Pope John Paul II and Patricia Neal by Marc Mellon; Gertrude Whitney
and Pope John XXIII by Charlotte Dunwiddie; Martin Luther King,
Jr. by Richard Blake; Dorothy Hamill and James F. Byrnes by Charles
Parks; Strom Thurmond by William Behrends; and Stonewall Jackson
by Donald De Lue.
