Charleston Co. Public Library Offers Works by Alyssa L. Millard
In all societies women have played a much
more important role than their men are willing to admit
Ashley Montagu
The Charleston County Public Library is presenting an exhibition entitled, Woman, featuring works by Alyssa L. Millard. The exhibition will be on view during the month of May in the Saul Alexander Gallery of the Main Branch in downtown Charleston, SC.
Woman is an exploration of the portrayal of people as objects, and more specifically, the existence of stereotypical roles introduced and maintained through such things as mythology and religious beliefs. (In this show the artist chose to focus on women, but she acknowledges that men experience just as much stereotyping). This idea grew out of the artist's look at the phenomena of attaching sentimental value to objects and in turn having these objects define you as a person.
This show consists of mezzotints, a rare type
of acid-free etching in which the plate is prepared by hand with
a special rocking tool. Although time-consuming and difficult,
the results that are yielded are unique and well worth it!
Millard is a emerging artist who graduated from The College of
Charleston with a BA in Studio Art and a concentration in printmaking.
She is currently pursuing her second degree , a BS in Psychology,
in order to attain an MA in Art Therapy. Millard is currently
working as an assistant to Corrie McCallum at the Halsey-McCallum
Studio in Charleston.
Millard's work has been shown in several College of Charleston
shows/venues, as well as at Print Studio South in 2001, on the
International Mezsotint Society's website, and in numerous juried
exhibitions throughout the area.
