Gallery on 8th in Myrtle Beach, SC, Features Works by Mary LaRue Wells

Gallery on 8th in Myrtle Beach, SC, is presenting an exhibition of works by surrealist, Mary LaRue Wells, as the next featured artist to display works at the gallery. Wells is exhibiting her unique work through June 30, 2002, which will also be available for sale. She will join a talented and distinctive cast of artists currently represented at Gallery on 8th, which opened in Sept. 2001.

Wells' work is a amazing mixture of mediums, combining paint with patterned paper and stamps. If you look close enough at a Wells' painting you will find that it is more than just a pretty picture. A Wells' creation is a passionate statement of wildlife "on the edge". Each work teases the viewer with an array of symbols and secret codes. Wells paints her surrealistic view of the world, in which she sees reality but always with a twist that frequently eludes others. She fills every corner of white space on the paper or canvas with paint or collage and always in vivacious, enchanting colors.

Wells describes herself as a playwright who creates on her "stage", stories with a twisted plot. The eccentric characters and quirky imagery surrounding the characters draw the viewer closer and invites them to become a part of her play.

Wells is a graduate of the University of Washington where she pursued graduate studies and became an Instructor of Art at the Seattle campus. She then traveled with her husband, a career officer in the US Army, but never let her family responsibilities hinder her passion to paint. Wells has created hundreds of oils and acrylics and has been a regular participant at the Springmaid Beach Watercolor Workshops over the past six years. Her work can be found in galleries throughout the eastern United States in New York City, Washington, DC, Reston, VA, Hilton Head Island, SC, and Savannah, GA.

Along with Wells' work, Gallery on 8th continues to show works by several local, regional and national artists. Some of the artists which are represented include: Robert Sadlemire, Thomas Davis, Alex Powers, Kevin Strickland, Peter Moore, Anne Cunningham, Alan Levinson, James Matthews, Karen Crenshaw and Irene Bailey. The gallery continually searches for new and interesting talent in and away from this area.
