McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, Offers Affiliate Artists Exhibition

Through Aug. 19, 2002, six area artists will work in the McColl Center for Visual Art's state-of-the-art facility (formerly known at the Tryon Center for Visual Art) located at 721 North Tryon Street, in Charlotte, NC. This special four-month residency provides these artists with the gift of time and space to explore their creative vision. The artists were selected through a peer-review jury process.

An exhibition featuring their art opens on May 24 and continues through Aug. 16, 2002. The exhibition will feature the work of the six summer affiliates and two other current 18-month Affiliate Artists.

The Summer 2002 Affiliate Artists are: Sherry Beatty, a painter and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Visual Art Instructor; Maja Godlewska, a painter originally from Poland now living in Charlotte; Shaun Cassidy, a sculptor from Rock Hill, SC; Al-Rawi Raed, a painter originally from Iraq, now living in Charlotte; Gwen Bigham, an installation artist born in Lancaster, SC, now living in Matthews, NC; and Scott McCulloch, a sculptor from Rock Hill, SC.

The two 18-month Affiliates who will also participate in the exhibition are: Catherine Cross Uehara, of Charlotte, and Peggy Rivers, of Rock Hill, SC.

This 4-month summer session also allows two of the local Artists-in-Residence to continue the works they began during the Winter 2002 Session. Those artists are: Sherry Beatty and Maja Godlweska. Beatty is a visual art teacher at West Mecklenburg High School and was chosen to be this year's Art Teacher Resource Resident. Godlweska and her husband now live in Charlotte, but are originally from Poland. Both artists applied to extend their time at the Center to continue exploring all the resources available at McColl Center, particularly the facilities in the media lab, print shop and dark room. Both agree that it is rare to be afforded free access to so much state-of-the art technology and equipment, not to mention such a supportive environment for creating art.

In its third year, McColl Center's extended Affiliate program gives area artists access to space, equipment, other artists, and resources not usually provided to them by normal studio spaces. Normally, the Center supports eight affiliates over an 18-month period. This special summer session was created to allow artists who cannot commit to the 18-month affiliation a chance to use the facilities and concentrate on their work for a substantial four-month period.

McColl Center for Visual Art is a progressive, not-for-profit organization committed to enhancing and promoting visual arts in the southeast United States. An affiliate organization of the Arts and Science Council-Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Inc., the center is a member of both Alliance of Artists' Communities and Res Artis, national and international consortiums of artist communities, respectively. McColl Center for Visual Art is also supported by the North Carolina Arts Council.
