McColl Center in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Artists at Spirit Square

What's New 2 at McColl Center for Visual Art's Spirit Square Galleries, in Charlotte, NC, begins May 3 and continues through June 30, 2002. Featuring three-dimensional art, the exhibition is the second in a series designed to showcase the work of artists living in and around Charlotte and ranging from Asheville, NC, to Charleston, SC.

Through this exhibition, McColl Center continues to respond to area artists' requests for opportunities to exhibit their new work in Charlotte. What's New 2 has been curated by individuals with a wealth of experience in both three-dimensional art and artistic communities throughout this country and the world. The three curators are: Vaclav Fiala, Czechoslovakian sculptor and recent McColl Center Artist-In-Residence; Bernie Lubell, San Francisco sculptor and recent McColl Center Artist-In-Residence, and Pallas Lombardi, McColl Center's Director of Residencies and Exhibitions. Together they reviewed 41 submissions of three-dimensional art by area artists.

The 14 artists selected are: Kathleen Campbell, Shaun Cassidy, Robert Gardener, Jonathan W. Hills, Kit Kube, Mike Lavine, Marek Ranis, Marya Roland, Rudy Rudisill, Loren Schwerd, Paula Smith, Roy Strassberg, Brad Thomas, and Catherine Cross Uehara.

To encourage discussion about the local art scene among artists, administrators, and the public during the exhibition, McColl Center will host two free public forums at the Galleries on May 22 and June 12, from 7-9pm.

The exhibition is partially supported by the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Arts & Science Council, and private and public funders supporting McColl Center for Visual Art.

McColl Center for Visual Art is a progressive, not-for-profit organization committed to enhancing and promoting the visual arts in Mecklenburg County and building the Charlotte Region into a vital visual arts center.
