Moonshell Gallery in Hilton Head, SC, Offers Works by Carol Rothrock & Susan Colwell
Ann Light's Moonshell Art Gallery in Hilton Head, SC, presents the art exhibit Infusion, a Bravo event on view through May 31, 2002. Infusion features pastel and acrylics by Carol Rothrock and oils by Susan Colwell.
Carol Rothrock is immersed in the natural beauty of the Lowcountry and the west. Living on the western slope in Colorado since 1997, Rothrock captures her passion for nature in rich, luminous landscape paintings. Her intense colors and unique perspective express the energy, sprit, and beauty of the land.
Rothrock's artistic interpretations began at age 8, when she began art lessons at the Gertrude Herbert Art Institute in Augusta GA. She received a BFA in Art education from the University of Georgia in 1974 and continues study with master pastelist Herman Margulies, Charleston, SC, artist Martin Ahrens and other contemporary artists. Over the past 10 years, Rothrock has received numerous awards in national and regional art competitions. Her work has been juried into shows such as Pastel Society of America, Catherine Lorillard Wolffe, Knickerbocker Artist and Pastel Society of New Mexico. She has achieved "Member in Excellence" status in the Southeastern Pastel Society. Her paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Canada. Her work is included in the Hilton Head Library's permanent collection.
Susan Colwell gets her inspiration for her paintings from the distinct landscape on the Wando River where she lives in Charleston. Her work captures the very essence of the Carolina light that is a constant challenge to her. In Colwell's impressionist style in oil she is able to create a ambience that is unique in all her paintings which carries you into that lovely place of color.
Having been introduced to the love of painting as a child she studied at the Toledo Museum of Art and as a teenager, had her first solo exhibition in Toledo, OH. Winner of numerous awards and scholarships, she earned her BFA in painting at Miami University, Oxford, OH, and did graduate work at the University of Rochester in New York. Her paintings are in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Colwell has also worked as a graphic artist for several advertising agencies in Ohio, Indiana and California.
On May 10, Colwell will demonstrate her technique in oil and Rothrock will demonstrate her technique in pastel from 3- 5pm at the gallery.
