Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Kim English
Smith-Killian Fine
Art in Charleston, SC, will be hosting the premier show in Charleston
of internationally famed painter Kim English, May 17-31, 2002.
The first time you see a painting by Kim English, no matter what
your background, you know that it is something special. Your eyes
linger around the painting a little longer. You try to look as
closely as possible, and then stand back to see how far the image
will still grab you. What pulls you in is the artist's dramatic
sense of light, creating rhythm, movement, and balance in a fresh
approach. His paintings remind you of snapshots in your memory,
such as the day in the country when the light hit the trees so
perfectly that you decided you couldn't go home just yet.
As a painter from Colorado, who teaches in
Arizona, New Mexico, and Europe, it is hard to guess what will
pop up as inspiration for subject matter. English's subjects range
from still life, genre, figurative, and landscape. His name may
be new to the low country but his influence is not. Shannon Smith,
a well-known and collected artist from Charleston, considers him
to be her mentor. He has been compared to some of the great masters
for his use of chiaroscuro, which he accomplishes by creating
depth by strong contrasts of light and dark. Another talent is
how he captures fleeting moments, which call to mind favorite
impressionists. Combining his interest in light with his method
of completing a painting in one sitting, it is amazing to see
how fresh and alive the canvas becomes.
