Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Timothy Rose and Gregory Litinsky

The Somerhill Gallery announces a new feature exhibition of recent works by artists Timothy Rose and Gregory Litinsky. Stainless steel mobile sculpture by Rose and watercolors by Litinsky will be exhibited through May 17, 2002.

Says gallery director Joseph Rowand, "This is the first featured exhibition by these two exciting artists at Somerhill. With anxious anticipation, I look forward to seeing the natural choreography of Rose's gleaming compositions as they flex and move in the gallery light. Rowand feels that the combination of Rose's steel mobiles with Gregory Litinsky's watercolors will be harmonious and fascinating. "After several years of representing Gregory's work," he says, "I am thrilled to he able to present an entire collection of his paintings. His unique slant combines abstraction with heart-warming humor."

Rose resides in Valejo, CA, and works from his studio on Mare Island. He is the recipient of numerous awards and commissions. With an artistic career now spanning more than forty years, Rose has demonstrated an enormous capacity for both creativity and construction as he has explored the world of mobile sculpture. He has worked both small and large, with all variety of shapes and colors, rendering dynamic three-dimensional sculpture which engages and captivates the viewer. In his most recent body of work the mobiles have icon left unpainted, with Rose polishing and burnishing the stainless steel surface to soften the light and create unique patterns on the bright steel.

Since his first significant commission in 1971 for the Paris Herald-Tribune, Rose has been invited to build sculpture for the San Francisco museum of modern art, the Children's Ward Hospital in Silver Spring, MD, the Chula Vista Nature Center in San Francisco, and most recently the SC Aquarium in Charleston. The aquarium commission spans over 180 feet and incorporates over two hundred individual mobile components.

Gregory Litinsky cites life and nature as his primary sources of inspiration. His paintings are filled with birds, cats, flowers, and all sorts of brightly colored subject matter which he paints with both skill and whimsy. "I love watercolor because it has a certain spontaneity," Litinsky says. "Also, I like its transparency. I consider watercolor to be a magical medium." The spontaneity and transparency Litinsky refers to are apparent in his work. The paintings are completely unique in their styling, as well as pleasing to the eye.

Litinsky has also had a long and notable career as an artist. Originally from the Ukraine, Litinsky studied painting in Poland and France before coming to the US in 1954. In just the past ten years he has been the recipient of far too many awards to list, including the Gold Medal of Honor award from the Red River Watercolor Society and a Purchase Award from the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri. His paintings have been exhibited in many museums and galleries throughout the US, and he is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and many others.
