Kids' Art Day to Feature Fabric Art Fun at the Community Arts Center in Brevard, NC
The Transylvania County Arts Council in Brevard, NC, is now taking reservations for Kids' Art Day on May 17, 2003. Children ages 7 to 15 will become part of a "human loom," create large-scale fabric collages and make "peace poles" using bamboo, silk streamers and ribbons.
Kids' Art Day is held each spring on the lawn of the Community Arts Center in Brevard. During this year's event, children will weave a wall-hanging by stretching warp between hand-held poles and becoming the shuttle that carries the weft across; they will create fabric collages on large-scale panels that will be displayed among the trees; and they will make "peace poles" by decorating ribbons and silk streamers with stamp art, messages and wishes that will blow in the wind atop tall bamboo poles set throughout the lawn. These creations will be displayed outside throughout the summer.
Children also will take home woven bracelets and anklets made by the French Broad Weavers who will give demonstrations and assist children with their projects throughout the day.
Parents can sign up their children for the morning session, from 9:30am to 12:30pm or the afternoon session, from 1:30 to 4:30pm. The participation fee is $2 per child. To register your child, call the Transylvania County Arts Council at 828/884-2787.
Artist Suzanne Gernandt, who will lead the day's activities, also has led Fiber Day activities at the Folk Art Center as well as workshops at the Swannanoa Valley Youth Academy and the Rainbow Mountain Children's School in Asheville.
Kids' Art Day is one of the Arts Council's most visible activities. In the past, children have created painted windsocks, larger-than-life flowers and bugs and a giant dragon to adorn the Arts Center's front lawn facing South Caldwell Street.
Kids' Art Day is sponsored annually by Harris Architects of Brevard. The Arts Council thanks Doug and Ellen Harris for making Kids' Art Day possible through their generous support. Thanks also go to Nancy MacDonald and the French Broad Weavers.
