Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Robert Motherwell
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of works on paper by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), unquestionably one of the most significant American artists of the twentieth century. Now representing the Motherwell Estate, the gallery will present over thirty lithographs, etchings, ink drawings and paintings on paper. The exhibition entitled, Works on Paper, will be on view from May 17 through July 12, 2003.
In the 1940s, Motherwell became an important member of a group of artists including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. Known as the Abstract Expressionists, this generation of artists changed the face of American painting forever. Motherwell gave emotion and feeling a physical presence in his work. He said, "The function of the artist is to express reality as 'felt.'" Practicing what is called Automatism, Motherwell allowed the first mark or drip on a piece of paper to initiate a dialogue between the medium and himself. He used his body's natural motions and innate gestures; gestures that he said were built into your arm and wrist.
With a career that spanned half a century, Motherwell has been represented in countless museum and gallery exhibitions both in the United States and abroad. His first major retrospective was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. Since that time, Motherwell has been honored with retrospectives by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, among others.
