Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Recent Works by Tim Turner

After the Flood, a solo exhibition featuring recent abstract paintings by Tim Turner, will open at Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC on May 8. Richly colored and strongly textured, these canvasses will be on exhibit at the gallery through June 21, 2003.

Born in the Piedmont of North Carolina, Turner studied art at Appalachian State University and later at Penland School of Craft. Although he says he has drawn forever, he caught the "clay bug" in college and was a successful potter for many years. Around 1985, while running his own pottery studio and gallery, Turner began taking drawing, design and sculpture classes at ASU again. He would paint in the evenings and hang his work in his pottery studio. When people began buying his paintings on a regular basis, he decided it was time to take a break from clay.

The best way to appreciate the warm depth of Turner's abstracts is to familiarize oneself with his philosophy of modern art. "Art is about passion. It is about being consumed by the voices of everyday stimuli that surround us and having the urge to express themMy statement is one of simplicity. In form and color; it is raw, emotional, straightforward." Turner uses the intimate relationship between his painted lines and colors to mirror the interconnections between friends, lovers, parents, nature and spirituality.

When viewing Turner's newest work, you see that he has increased the richness of the image by adding multiple layers of color on top of a heavily textured substructure. These surfaces are then intermingled and abraded, exposing the multiple color layers in geological fashion. It is these commingled regions of color and texture combined with strong brushwork and other tracks left by the artist that deliver great emotional impact along with subtle visual power to this body of work.
