Wickwire Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Offers Works by Jane Todd Butcher
Wickwire
fine art/folk art in Hendersonville, NC, proudly presents the
work of watermedia collage artist, Jane Todd Butcher in a one-woman
show entitled, Nature's Elements, featuring colorful, interesting,
and unpredictable collage paintings. The exhibition opens
on May 23 and continues through June 22, 2003. A 20% off
gallery-wide anniversary sale is planned for the days, May 23-25,
only.
Butcher is trained as an illustrator and a graphic designer as
well as a painter. This requires a versatility that adds
diversity to her artwork. Many of her current works revolve
around landscape and nature themes, in a style more impressionistic
than literal. They are created in a medium best described as watermedia
collage. These collage paintings are composed of Japanese
rice papers and tissue that Butcher dyes and stains individually
with water based inks or acrylic paints. She cuts and tears
the papers into new shapes and adheres layers to an acid-free
support board or paper. Elements combine in a unique style and
in vibrant colors that have become her trademark.
"Although my work is representational, dealing primarily
with landscape," says Butcher, "I prefer only to suggest
a place or an image. I want the viewer to sense my feelings
and memories of a place, and the atmosphere of the landscape,
rather than to recognize specific landmarks or images. Nature
and the conservation of our forests and other natural resources
often carry over into my painting. Trees and waterways appear
frequently as dominant subjects."
Originally from the Midwest, Butcher earned a BA in Art from
Illinois State University, after which she moved to Greenville,
SC, and has continued to study painting with many nationally known
artists. She has been awarded signature membership in the South
Carolina Watercolor Society and the
Georgia Watercolor Society, and has been selected for numerous
regional and national exhibitions. Butcher's work has received
awards throughout the Southeast, and is included in many corporate
and private collections.
