The Audubon Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Etchings by Walter R. Locke
The Audubon Gallery in Charleston, SC, will
present a selection of etchings of the southeastern and New England
landscape by Walter R. Locke from May 21 - June 13, 2004.
Locke was born in Winchester, MA, on Feb. 13, 1883. He received
his art training under the guidance of Louis Kronberg and Alfred
Hutty. He spent twelve years of his life literally living and
working in the woods. This intimate knowledge of the natural landscape
is very evident in his meticulous and sensitive treatment of flora
and fauna on the copper plate. His beautiful renderings of trees
certainly rival those of other eminent American artists such as
Hans Kleiber and Hutty.
The time of Locke's death remains somewhat of a mystery, although it is known that he lived in and maintained a studio in Anclote, FL.
The Audubon Gallery which was established in
1987 was purchased in Nov., 2003, by Joel Oppenheimer in partnership
with Burton E. Moore III, who is acting director.
