Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by John Moore
In 2003, John Moore
produced a portfolio of street photographs taken in Charleston
over a twenty-five year period, entitled, Charleston Photographs,
1978-2003. During the months of May and June, 2004, the Saul
Alexander Foundation Gallery at the main branch of the Charleston
County Public Library in Charleston, SC, will be presenting an
exhibition titled, Charleston Photographs, 1978 - 2003 - A
Portfolio.
Here is what Moore says about this exhibition, "I am principally
a landscape photographer, and most of my photography has been
done in wild places near and far because my natural inclination
is to be in those places. I live and work in the city though,
and have long found an infinite amount of imagery available for
photography downtown. There is an incredible energy in the streets
and on the faces of the buildings of Charleston. For me, this
has been especially true on the cool, blue sky late afternoons
of winter and early spring, when the sun and the shadows race
down the streets, when the textured surfaces that reveal what
the city is made of appear and colors glow electric."
Moore continues, "These color photographs of Charleston were
taken over a period of time, from 1978 to 2003, when the city
underwent significant changes. The images are generally not recognizable
street scenes, but are often a more intimate and ephemeral view
of the places we pass by everyday."
Moore's interest in photography began in the mid-1970's as a college student. It started as an outgrowth of time spent backpacking in the North Carolina mountains and on travels to natural landscapes in the West. Around 1980 photography became a serious avocation and passion and remains so to this day. His work has concentrated chiefly on two subject matters; natural landscapes, and the built environment as seen from the streets of Charleston.
In 1997, Moore's close up photographs of rusted
steel surfaces found on the streets were exhibited in a solo show
Rust Never Sleeps at the City Gallery at the Dock Street
Theatre in Charleston. His street photographs have appeared in
many juried exhibits, including several Southern Visions
exhibits at The Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, and several
Piccolo Spoleto exhibits.
Moore's landscape photographs have appeared in many juried exhibits,
including Southern Visions exhibits, Piccolo Spoleto exhibits,
Sierra Club sponsored photography exhibits, and in many group
shows at area galleries. In 1987, Moore's photographs of the Great
Smoky Mountains appeared in a solo exhibit at Charleston's City
Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre.
