Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, Presents Works by Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg
Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Hot Glass Paris / Cold Glass Murano, featuring works by Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg, from May 14 through June 30, 2004.
This glass exhibition by Guggisberg and Baldwin focuses their interest on glass sculpture with gracefully fluid shapes and texture. The elongated forms clearly suggest something found in nature - shore birds, grasses or flowers past their bloom. They are tall and slightly curved.
Baldwin and Guggisberg formed a creative partnership over twenty years ago in Sweden. After two years working for Adolfsson and Wolff, they established their own studio near Lausanne, Switzerland. They have collaborated on a vast range of work, from "tabletop" designs, designing for major companies such as Rosenthal, Steuben and Venini and most importantly, their own refined forms of pure artistic creation. Theirs has been a remarkable trajectory of learning from the sober forms of Swedish character to the brilliant colors of Italy. Their dedication to clear form, concentrating especially on their most recent work in sculptural forms and objects created in a language uniquely their own, matched by strong, exuberant colors, dominated by a sense of harmony and proportion.
"Two things especially excite us about our newest work," says Baldwin. "First is the celebration of the sphere - the most profoundly primordial and ubiquitous shape in the known universe, right to the big bang. One of the fundamental symbols of all cultures throughout humanity is sojourn on earth, the sphere embodies our sense of community, the wholeness of things, cosmic universality. Whatever we hold sacred may be found in the sphere."
"The integration of the glass with the flexing metal spines and undulating lines they yield, allows for a juxtaposition of forms in a single sculpture which celebrates the play of color, light and texture. As glass people this remains our holy grail," says Guggisberg.
Baldwin and Guggisberg have won numerous prizes and awards in Europe and the US and their work is found in museums and private collections around the world.
