Enoteca Vin in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Daniel Hamilton for Contemporary Art Museum

The Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, NC, announces a new exhibition of works by Daniel Hamilton to be held at Enoteca Vin in Raleigh, which will be on view through June 13, 2004

Hamilton's artworks combine typography and digital imagery into sentimental landscapes. The artist uses typography as a design element which doubles as a conceptual anchor. Statements such as "Dear____, I've decided to leave you behind", and "I daydream about disappearing" feel as though the words have been snipped out of the artist's journal or letter to a loved one. But the words also seem generic and can easily be translated into the life of whomever is viewing the work. The digital photographic imagery collaged under the text includes images of the artists grandmother and grandfather on a romantic outing in the early 1900s, as well as snapshots of the artist's surroundings, and patterns from environments he encountered as a child.

A majority of the artworks exhibited are digital prints on canvas. The surface of the canvas is coated in a thick reflective high gloss resin, referencing the mass-produced, cliche images found in contemporary print publications and television. Hamilton's work has recently been exhibited at Lump and Rebus Work Galleries.

Hamilton studied painting and drawing at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and attended graduate school at Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, where he was part-time faculty. He currently works as an instructor at the School for Communication Arts in Raleigh, and does freelance graphic design. He is also a studio member of Basement Studios.

The Contemporary Art Museum is organizing this exhibition series as part of its programming as a "museum without walls." Through partnerships with venues such as Enoteca Vin, CAM is able to continue its mission of supporting new and innovative works by regional artists. Since opening four years ago, Enoteca Vin has become closely aligned with the arts community. Vin's urban setting is conducive to art, attracting art patrons and artists alike. The restaurant has supported the North Carolina Symphony, the North Carolina Ballet, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Art Museum through in-kind donations, sponsorship, volunteer efforts and by hosting special events. Through Vin's ongoing relationship with the Contemporary Art Museum, it became apparent that the restaurant can provide a new means of support by serving as an adjunct gallery space for the museum.

The Contemporary Art Museum is a non-profit organization supported by its members, individual contributors, corporate and foundation support, the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission, the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, with funds from the United Arts campaign and the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Contemporary Art Museum is an educational organization, linking visual literacy to contemporary life.
