Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Tony Hernandez

The Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, Reflection in King's Blue, featuring works by Tony Hernandez, from May 7 through June 12, 2004.

Hernandez uses symbolic imagery that functions like language, which is created through his own personality, memory and experience. They are isolated images of children ennobled in crowns or dunce hats, holding a dove, a toy train, a plane or a suitcase, and suspended in time. Hernandez continues to examine separation, isolation, hope and salvation. His is a self-contained world without regard for what is fashionable or mainstream. He acknowledges what he sees through his allegories.

Hernandez's paintings are made with encaustic and feature works on wood and on paper. He paints with thin layers of wax, oil pigment and gold leaf. Using a blowtorch, he fuses these layers causing the wax to engulf the pigments. This techniques creates mysterious depth and shadows that Hernandez is known for.

Born in Atlanta, GA, Hernandez attended the Art Institute of Atlanta and went on to study architecture at Southern College of Technology. His work is very labor intensive and has been recognized by international collections. The San Francisco Museum of Fine Art purchased his work for their collection as well as the High Museum in Atlanta. The musical group Train bought the rights to several of his paintings for their cd cover that was shown on the David Letterman show.

This is Hernandez's fifth solo exhibition at Hidell Brooks Gallery.
