Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Betty Anglin Smith

Betty Anglin Smith's work has been honored and collected across the country for nearly 30 years. The Natural Landscape, her latest series, will premier in Charleston on May 2 and continue through May 31, 2004.)

This collection of work intimately exposes Smith's relationship with the marshes surrounding her new studio in Meggett, SC. For those who have followed her work, the brilliant colors and bold brushstrokes are still signature in this collection. What will surprise is her familiarity with her subject matter. In her first solo show in two years, Smith has once again revealed a different side of Lowcountry beauty. The variegated palette in the collection pushes forth a preternatural sensation while still allowing the viewer accessibility to the scenery. Always demonstrating a fresh perspective, and using inventive ways of selecting composition, each piece from The Natural Landscape, delves deeper into her surrounding environ.

"The change and renewed focus came in July 2003. We moved my studio to a country cottage on the edge of the Wadmalaw Sound. The subjects I've been so fond of painting are now right outside my windows. Each day I experience the sunrise and sunsets and all the dramatic skies in between. The vistas, with its atmospheric hues, are endless. Living it first hand is like seeing it for the first time," says Smith.

This inspirational show is not to be missed. These are more than just landscape paintings; these are aesthetic contextual studies in oil paint.
