Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Susan Colwell
The Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, Tall and Stately, featuring recent works by Susan Colwell thorugh May 31, 2004.
Colwell gets her inspiration for her paintings from the distinct landscape on the Wando River where she lives in Charleston. Her work captures the very essence of the Carolina light that is a constant challenge to her. In Colwell's impressionist style in oil she is able to create a ambience that is unique in all her paintings which carries you into that lovely place of color.
"I'm not out of the woods yet!," says Colwell, adding. "I love the grace of a solitary oak and the flickering light patterns in a pine forest. The shade of a clump of trees pulls you in with a mystery all its own. Looking at the marsh through the oaks and dogwoods presents an ever changing vision through the seasons. Capturing the mood is always the goal and hopefully, one can feel the spontaneity and energy in each painting."
Having been introduced to the love of painting as a child Colwell studied at the Toledo Museum of Art and as a teenager, had her first solo exhibition in Toledo, OH. Winner of numerous awards and scholarships, she earned her BFA in painting at Miami University, Oxford, OH, and did graduate work at the University of Rochester in New York. Her paintings are in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Colwell has also worked as a graphic artist for several advertising agencies in Ohio, Indiana and California.
