University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, to Host First Southeast Association of Book Arts Conference May 19 - 21, 2005

The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, will host the first conference of the Southeast Association of Book Arts from May 19 - 21, 2005.

Book art refers to the art and craft of book-making, in which an artist creates a book to convey a specific idea and often handles all aspects of the process, from paper making to design to printing. While some date the art of the book to the ancient biblical scribes, the latest resurgence of book art followed a trend of counter culture art of the 1960s. Its revival today has taken even more artistic dimensions through computer graphic design.

The public is invited to meet some of the nation's most celebrated book artists from 5:30-7:30pm on May 21, 2005, at USC's McMaster Gallery (corner of Senate and Henderson streets). The conference event, which is free, will feature an exhibit of book art works, including ones by Julie Chen, Peter Madden and Amanda Love. Many of the books will be for sale, and food and beverages will be served.

"People will be fascinated by what painters, illustrators, photographers, papermakers and image makers of all kinds can do with paper and glue and a good idea," said USC art professor Dr. Susan Hogue, the conference
coordinator. "This is going to be an exciting gathering, and we want people to meet and talk with book artists about different book structures, the history of the book and discover new ways of thinking about book forms."

Before the conference, the public will have opportunities to learn about and see book art. USC's McKissick Museum will host an exhibition that will feature the work of students in the South Carolina Honors College who took the class, "The Art of the Book," this semester. Hogue, Dr. Stephanie Nace, an assistant art professor, and Claudia Brinson of The State newspaper taught the course.

The exhibit will also feature works by nationally known book artists, as well as ones by USC faculty.  The exhibit, More than Words Can Say: A Celebration of Book Arts, will be on display through July 16, 2005.

Anyone interested in learning more about book arts also can attend the Southeast Association for Book Arts conference, which will feature workshops by 14 book artists from around the country. Workshop topics include binding, image-making, papermaking, printing, digital books, altered books, stamping books, suminagashi paper marbling, mechanical press printing and writing for artists' books. The conference also will feature discussions on contemporary artists' books as related to book-art pioneers and the history of book arts.

Workshop leaders include: Jake Benson, USC; Julie Chen, Mills College, Oakland, CA; Cynthia Colbert, USC; Scott Gwara, USC; Amanda Love, Chicago, IL; Peter Madden, Boston, MA; Stephanie Nace, USC; Jane Powell, Saluda, NC; Kathleen Robbins, USC; Mary Robinson, USC, and Debbie Sherer, USC. Conference guest speakers include: Julie Chen, Mills College, Oakland, CA; Priscilla Juvelis, Boston, MA; Peter Madden, Boston, MA; Patrick Scott, USC; and David Shields, USC.

The conference schedule can be accessed online at (www.cas.sc.edu/art/SABA/index.html).

Conference registration costs is $425 and includes workshops, meals and receptions. To register or for more information, contact Susan Hogue at 803/576-5963 or Stephanie Nace at 803/777-5880.
