Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, Offers Panel Discussion on Future of Art Community Leaders May 18, 2005

The Contemporaries of the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, will host an evening reception and panel discussion on the importance of arts involvement for the next generation of community leaders on May 18, 2005, from 6-8pm. The event titled, American Women and a Portrait of Community Icons, is held in conjunction with the museum's exhibition, American Women: A Selection from the National Portrait Gallery on view from the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, through July 10, 2005. The evening reception begins at 6pm followed by a 7pm question-and-answer panel discussion in the museum's Lorick Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door or free for Contemporaries members; a cash bar will be on hand. In keeping with the theme of the museum's traveling exhibition, American Women, several notable women from the city of Columbia will be at the evening event as panelists including Mary Rainey Belser, board member of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities; Susan Boyd, major Columbia Museum of Art patron and longtime civic beautification advocate; and Dr. Suzan D. Boyd, president of the board of trustees at the Columbia Museum of Art.

The three community leaders will speak about the importance of arts involvement in their own personal lives and about the value of arts participation for the betterment of the community at large. "We selected these women to speak based upon their successful leadership promoting the arts through various civic and philanthropic organizations," said Carey Ward, Contemporaries board president. Of particular interest during the evening panel discussion will be the dialogue centered on guiding and developing a new generation of arts supporters - a topic central to the mission of the Contemporaries. "The Contemporaries represent the next generation of community leaders, and this is an opportunity to participate in an educational forum to discuss the importance of the arts and how our generation can make a difference," said Ward. The Contemporaries is an affiliate membership group at the Columbia Museum of Art that seeks to bring young professionals together in appreciation of the arts and to support the overall mission of the museum. The group hosts a variety of social and cultural events throughout the year for arts enthusiasts ages 21 and above, culminating in the annual Young Artist of the Year Soiree scheduled to take place this year on Nov. 3, 2005. A portion of the Contemporaries' proceeds will go toward the purchase of contemporary art to add to the Columbia Museum of Art's permanent collection.
