Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Maria White

The Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, is proud to present the exhibition, Natural Response - Works in Porcelain, featuring new work by ceramic artist, Maria White, on view from May 13 through June 10, 2005.

Exploring form and surface, the exhibit will showcase a large body of porcelain works. On display will be, "globes", "pods", and "water plates" - works yielding sensual surfaces with organic patterns and colors. Reacting to the simple beauty we find in everyday life, White's pieces are abstracted studies of forms found in nature. According to White, " The carvings and texture I create on the surface of my pieces interplay with light and shadow causing subtle changes as the day progresses."

White's art is functional with a modern elegance. Working exclusively in porcelain, the process begins on the wheel. She is known for her unique hand carving and glazing techniques. "Carving into clay is a very intuitive process, which is why I became excited about using handmade tools," says White. "After the high fire (2350 degrees Fahrenheit), when the piece becomes vitreous, I will sometimes sandblast the surface to give it a more matte, antiqued finish."

White's passion for working with clay spans a decade. She received a BA in Art from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, studied art in Rome and Florence, and attended workshops at the prestigious art & craft schools, Penland School in North Carolina and Haystack Mountain School in Maine. White went on to apprentice and studio assist with renowned sculptor Michael Sherrill.

White has exhibited nationally, earning numerous awards; her work has been featured in motion picture and television series such as NBC's Friends. White currently lives in California with her husband, filmmaker Matthew Mebane.
