Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC, Offers Works by Addie Shevlin
A series of luminous abstract paintings by Addie Shevlin, will be exhibited in the Little Gallery in the Mepkin Abbey Store at Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC. The exhibit will be on view from May through Aug. 2005. This San Francisco, CA, artist bases her exhibit on a poem by Roethke - when the eye begins to see.
Shevlin uses gold and copper leaf as the base of her compositions. Next canvases are covered with vivid colors of paint. Then Shevlin removes sections of the paint to reveal the metallic colors underneath. "I enjoy seeing how far I can push the paint, how far in the darkness I can go, before pulling back, into the light," says Shevlin.
Shevlin has exhibited in numerous west coast galleries and has works in private collections through North America. Her paintings have been featured in venues ranging from liturgical settings to the Sebastopol Center for the Art and from the College of Marin to California Museum of Art (Santa Barbara).
Shevlin has a broad background in art including photography, jewelry making, and sculpture, although she is primarily a painter. She studied at the College of Marin, the California College of Arts and Crafts, The Art Student League (New York) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
In addition to art exhibitions the Mepkin Abbey Store has a collection of contemporary crafts for sale. Among the potters who have works in the store are Caroline Cercone, James Cornell, Susan Filley, Terry Gess, Rand Heazlitt, Shawn Ireland, Nina Liu, Linda Sharpless, and John Vasquez.
