Sculpture in the South 2005 Takes Place in Summerville, SC, on May 14 & 15
"Inspiring
Surprising and too good to miss!" That's what visitors have
said about Sculpture in the South, the 7th annual exhibit
and sale that takes place May 14 &15, 2005 in historic Summerville,
SC's Azalea Park. More than 30 nationally known sculptors present
their artwork at Sculpture in the South 2005, from miniature
to monumental, cowboys to whimsical fountains, ballet dancers
to giant tortoises. Discover sculpture in bronze, stone, wood,
and terra cotta suitable for the sitting room or the city park.
Artists remain on site all weekend to discuss their works and
chat leisurely with visitors similar to a studio visit,
but 30 times over! Enjoy Summerville's permanent sculpture collection
that invites touching, children's art activities and sculptor
demonstrations. Learn about the fascinating bronze process that
has been "virtually unchanged for over 4,000 years."
Sculpture in the South will help you define "What
Is Art?" and awaken the art connoisseur (you didn't know
you had) within you.
Would you like to meet the sculptor with artwork
in the permanent collection at Buckingham Palace? He'll be the
quick-witted Texan named Garland Weeks in the black cowboy hat.
Weeks is completing 3 weeks as Artist-in-Residence at Brookgreen
Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC, prior to Sculpture in the South
2005. He travels to Savannah, GA, to present "In Search
of the Elusive Gesture" May 17-21, 2005, at the Susie Chisholm
School of Sculpture. (Chisholm is also an award-winning artist
returning to Sculpture in the South).
Get to know the husband/wife collaborative team, Carl McCleskey
and Betsy Scott (GA), who have created monumental wildlife sculptures
for zoos across the country. Ronny Walker (CO) captures in bronze
the human figure and the internal fire of emotions, thoughts and
spirit. Roger Martin's (NC) will show you how he reveals the comic
personality of his wildlife subjects. Mick Doellinger's (native
Australian, now Texan) bronzes express his love of wildlife and
years of watching wild, free-ranging animals in their natural
habitat.
Get acquainted with Robert Allison (CO, formerly of Columbia,
SC) who created the public sculpture "For Wind and Waves"
in Summerville's Azalea Park, and the commissioned bronze "Everyday
Heroes," honoring all of Summerville's public safety personnel.
New to Sculpture in the South is Julie McCraney-Brogdon
(GA), whose life-like bronze figures range from warriors to mythological
personalities to portraits.
The event takes place on Sat., May 14, from 10am-6pm and Sun., May 15, from 10am-5pm. Admission is $5 for adults. Children and students of any age are admitted free. Proceeds benefit public sculpture program.
Sculpture in the South is both an event and a non-profit organization whose mission is the appreciation of sculpture through education; the creation of a collection of permanent outdoor sculpture in Summerville's public realm; and beautification of public areas.
