Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Chris Ritsch

Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibit of works by Chris Ritsch, on view through June 30, 2005.

Ritsch's Lowcountry paintings, with all their mysteries, enhance any environment in which they land. At first glance her landscapes may appear calm and serene but Ritsch's vibrant use of color and technique hint at the activity below the surface, both the visible and secret life contained therein.

Ritsch's figures are caught mid-movement, and much may be read into their attitude. She seems to easily capture her figures' attitudes and activities and conveys them to the viewer. Her still lifes beg you to sniff the flowers, eat the fruit and, just maybe, straighten the tablecloth.

Perhaps Ritsch's experience working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service contributes to her understanding of the underlying mysteries that lie just below the surface. Certainly her contemporary approach reflects her studies at the College of Charleston, the Virginia Torpedo Factory and the New York Studio School.

Among her awards Ritsch received top honors in the annual SC Oil Painters Invitational; an honor that includes participation in a two year long touring museum show of four paintings for two years. In the 25 year history of the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Juried Show, Ritsch is the only artist to be awarded Best in Show twice.
