Artful Living in Hickory, NC, features Works by Paul deMarrais
Artful Living, located on Level Three at the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC, will present the exhibit, Artist of the Month, featuring works by pastel artist Paul deMarrais, on view from May 1 - 31, 2006.
deMarrais offers the following statement, "I have been using pastels exclusively since I discovered them as an art student in 1975. I believe that each artist has a medium that best suits his style and for me that medium is pastel. Pastel colors are wonderfully pure and bright. Color is the strength of pastel and color is my chief interest in painting. A stroke of a great color can make a painting exciting or create a mood of mystery. For many years I have been making my own pastels to better understand and control the colors in my painting. To pour the beautiful rainbow of dry pigments from a bag is for me a thrilling experience. I enjoy being connected to my art materials like artists were in past centuries."
"Landscape painting has a long history and I am happy to be working in this great tradition, says deMarrais. "I have always been an outdoor person and love nothing better than a walk in a field on a pretty day. The beauty of nature is inspiring and uplifting to me and I hope to capture that feeling in my paintings. For twenty years my paintings were done entirely outdoors 'en plein air'. I was happy lugging my pastels over hills and fences and becoming friendly with passing cows and horses. Now I have discovered a digital camera and am comfortable as a studio painter as well."
"I love to experiment and pastel has endless possibilities to keep a painter going throughout many lifetimes," adds deMarrais. "Each painting brings new discoveries on my long artistic journey. Around the corner just might be that place that will inspire a great painting. It is that challenge and hope that keeps me going!"
