Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Features Works by Marie-Christine Maitre de Tarragon
Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, is presenting an exhibition of works by Marie-Christine Maitre de Tarragon, who has exhibited with Conn Gallery for more than two years. The exhibit will be on view through June 10, 2006.
Maitre de Tarragon, a native of France, lives in Campobello, SC, where she trains reining horses and creates her drawings, paintings and sculptures. Her family history abounds with horsemen and artists, including her great grandfather, Marquis de Valdahon, who was a renowned painter in the Eighteenth Century, and her grandmother, Countess Marie de Tarragon who studied the art of painting flowers under the master Redoute.
For this occasion Maitre deTarragon will exhibit
a wide range of work, including graphite studies of flowers, paintings
on silk, paper and canvas, and her powerful sculptures which reflect
her heritage and passion for the horse.
When Maitre de Tarragon speaks of horses her enthusiasm for their
energy and independence comes through. She states, "All my
life, horses have been my constant companions. They taught me
courage, compassion and patience and their attentive ears are
tuned to my heart. . ."
Maitre de Tarragon was educated in France, holds a BA in Literature and Philosophy and studied psychology for two years at the University of Paris Vincennes. She continued her education in this country for two years in the University of Utah's sculpture department, with another two years in the art department at the University of Pittsburgh. Following that she studied under Bob Lockhart at Bellarmine College in Kentucky.
Maitre de Tarragon has attended numerous seminars at the Artist School in Scottsdale, AZ. Her work has been commissioned and collected throughout France, Japan and the United States. She has a permanent installation in Louisville, KY, at the Mall of St. Mathew with twelve life size horse heads in a fountain setting.
Maitre de Tarragon states eloquently, "For
the sculptor, the urge to create may be a desire to possess something
unattainable, the hands creating before the mind could truly finish
the concept. The constant observation and reflection on life in
general, will bring maturity and style to the artist, learning
to simplify one's own philosophy, reassessing priorities, negotiating
the difficult balance between dream and reality."
