Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Celebrates Five Years with Exhibition
Laura Dickson
To celebrate its fifth birthday, Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, is having a surprise party on May 27, and gallery owner Brailsford Foster says she will be as surprised as everyone else. The event will also open the exhibition, It's About Place, Isn't It?, featuring works by Laura Spong, Anna Kay Singley, Frances Nelson, Claire Farrell, Laura Dickson, Margaret Carter and Angela Bradburn. The exhibit will continue through June 24, 2006.
"When I first had the idea of opening a gallery, I gave a lot of thought to where it should be located," said Foster. "I wanted the gallery to be unique and special, so it needed to be in an equally special location. Where else but Edisto Island? There is such a strong sense of place here and such an appreciation for the uniqueness of this island. It's why so many people return here year after year. I can't imagine the gallery being anywhere else."
The surprise birthday party will also feature works by seven women artists, all of whom are from the Columbia, SC, area, but have a special affinity for Edisto Island. The artists are Angela Bradburn, Margaret Carter, Laura Dickson, Suzy Farrell, Frances Nelson, Anna Kay Singley and Laura Spong; and they have been painting together for a number of years. While their styles and media vary, there will be a common thread throughout their works presented at Fish or Cut Bait Gallery; and that will be the surprise element revealed at the party.
Foster says she left it up to the artists to
come up with a unifying theme for the new show, which is entitled
Its About Place, Isn't it? The theme arose as the women
were discussing their approach to the exhibit, and one of the
artists reflected that it was just simply about their individual
ways of expressing their love for Edisto.
"It seems so simple, but it really is filled with lots of
possibility," said Foster. "Each of these artists has
a unique talent and way of expressing herself. The surprise will
be in how they portray and reflect the beauty of this island.
I can't wait to see what they have to offer and have no doubt
that it will be a spectacular exhibit. And, the best part will
be sharing it with our old friends that we've made over the five
years we've been in business as well as the new friends we are
just meeting."
