Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features New Group Exhibition

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition featuring works by four artists: Matt Overend, Eric Olsen, Alice Sebrell, and Marc Maiorana. The exhibition opens on May 5 and continues through June 30, 2006.

Matt Overend

Matt Overend of South Carolina is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology. He then studied at the University of California at Santa Barbara, following which he received a Fellowship to Yale University. Well known for his Road Studies and Still Life paintings, Overend will also include a number of his architectural paintings, a recent focus. His characteristic use of brushstroke is evident in these works, as is the use of light and color.

Eric Olsen

Eric Olsen of Charlotte attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC, the Art Institute of Chicago where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing, and East Carolina University where he completed his MFA. Olsen is interested in the human form through an abstracted interpretation of gestural drawings and bold color. The "looseness" of his technique de-emphasizes detail and focuses on form and movement.

Alice Sebrell

Alice Sebrell, a Charlotte native, has lived in Asheville, NC, since 1997. She earned her MFA in Photography from The Savannah College of Art and Design and her BFA from the University of Delaware. Sebrell was a recent recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Project Grant and a Charlotte/Mecklenburg Arts & Science Council Regional Emerging Artist Grant. Her camera has been used to subjectively obscure and rearrange her subjects in a delightfully surprising manner.

Marc Maiorana

Marc Maiorana studied metals at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He now maintains a studio in Asheville, NC, having completed his residency at Penland School of Crafts. The idea of beginning with mass and drawing down, down, and down into endless line is fundamental to Maiorana's work. The massive fabricated steel sculptures in this show are intended for outdoor installation where they will develop a rich patina with nature's wear.

In business since 1981, Hodges Taylor Gallery represents contemporary artists of the southeast, including paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture. The gallery offers a public venue in uptown Charlotte for viewing artwork and serves as art consultants for individual and corporate collectors.
