Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Maja Godlewska
Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce a solo show of works by important regional artist, Maja Godlewska, featuring her most recent works in ink on paper. The exhibition entitled, Maja Godlewska: Cumulus, will be on view from Apr. 7 through May 27, 2006.
Godlewska receives her inspiration for her stunning works in ink on paper from clouds. Known for her paintings which are characteristically full of texture and color, the works on paper are a beautiful addition to her oeuvre. Texture is replaced with line that is full of energy and movement. The washes of color deepen and soften, which give the pieces an ethereal effect. Godlewska often focuses her work on the nature of life and the fragile balance of body and intellect. When looking at her works, the viewer may be persuaded to draw an organic form from the flowing lines of this celestial-inspired artwork. This reaction is characteristic of Godlewska's work as she asks her audience "are we physical, organic elements of earthly environment or are we spiritual beings?"
Godlewska has been a Charlotte resident since 1997. Originally from Poland, she graduated with an MFA from the Academy of Fine Art Wroclaw. Since then her work has been shown locally and internationally. The work of this regional artist was recently added to the Mint Museum's permanent collection and Fifth Continent is currently on view in the upper galleries at the Mint Museum of Art. Godlewska was also selected to be in the ongoing CrossCurrents exhibition at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.
