Mary Martin, A Gallery of Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Randall LaGro
The Mary Martin, A Gallery of Fine Art in Charleston, SC, presents The Spaces Between, featuring new paintings by Randall LaGro on view from May 5 through June 5, 2006.
LaGro is one of the country's most prolific,
unique, and soul inspiring artist of his time. The Spaces Between
presents LaGro's new abstract alkyd paintings and intuitive monotypes.
The work, as a collection, is a continuance of abstract under
paintings.
Alkyd, which is a hybrid paint between acrylic and oil are finished
with oils and oil glazes. The paintings are meant to invite the
viewer to wonder. Close up they may even fall apart into complete
abstraction, then as the viewer spends time and looks from different
distances, things begin to form. "I do believe our culture
has left so little to our imaginations, these works are an invitation
to imagine - to tell ones own story," states LaGro.
When asked to reflect on his collection for the show, the artist states "It's a reference from everything from the process of the work, to my fascination with language and images; I'm looking for an order in the chaos."
LaGro meditatively seeks for hints of subtle imagery. Sometimes they are obvious, iconic figures or archetypal, other times very airy, as spirits. "It is a poetic reality, as an image maker, I am not interested in the snapshots, but the mystery in and between moments," LaGro says.
LaGro studied at El Camino College in Torrance, CA, the Graduate Academy of Art in San Francisco, and Graphic Impressions in Taos, NM. LaGro currently lives and works in the center of legendary artist colony in Taos.
