Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Francesco Licciardi
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, concludes a season of retrospectives with an exhibition that is a celebration of the human spirit and the drive to create art. Francesco Licciardi: A Retrospective opens on May 5 and will continue through June 30, 2006.
Licciardi studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art. After moving to Dubuque, IA, in 1961, Licciardi exhibited his work in solo shows at the University of Dubuque, the University of Wisconsin, and the Cedar Rapids Gallery of Art. Other exhibitions of his work took place in cities such as Iowa City, Washington, DC and Fort Myers.
Licciardi was an artist-in-residence for the city of Dubuque in 1976; held commissions to paint portraits of governors, senators, and arts patrons; and served on the Advisory Board for the Iowa Arts Council. In 1981, Licciardi and his wife moved to Charleston, where he also enjoyed exhibitions of his work.
In the mid 1970s Licciardi learned that he had a rare, untreatable malignancy. Even though he faced numerous health problems related to his illness, he continued to paint works in a "carnival of colors" with a "mature vision". Until the day of his death in Dec. of 1991, Licciardi continued to make art.
Francesco Licciardi: A Retrospective features works that Licciardi created over the course of his artistic career. The work reveals his "abundance of spirit" and is a testimony of the role the arts can play in enriching and giving meaning to life.
