Besides all the performing arts offering the

The North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, with assistance
from the South Carolina Artisan Center, present the 2006 South
Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition. As the state's
only fine craft competition and exhibition with awards in six
categories, objects juried into the exhibition compete for cash
prizes totaling $4000. This unique exhibition offered fine craft
artists the opportunity to exhibit their inspiring objects in
the media of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and three-dimensional
mixed media. The exhibition will be hosted at the North Charleston
Performing Arts and Charleston Area Convention Center from May
5 - 13, 2006.
Artists entering the competition had the optional opportunity for the works to be included in the South Carolina State Museum's 2006/2007 Traveling Exhibitions Program. The exhibition will be on tour throughout South Carolina for one year. Scott Shanklin-Peterson was the 2006 Palmetto Hands juror. She is the Director of the Arts Management Program at the College of Charleston and for the past four years was on the Board of Trustees for the American Craft Council. Additionally, she is the former Senior Deputy Chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts and the former Executive Director of the South Carolina Arts Commission.
Sculpture students from the College of Charleston will be installing original works on North Charleston City Hall grounds from May 8 - 23, 2006. Eleven sculptures were initially funded by the I'On Trust for an exhibition in Mt. Pleasant, SC. They will be re-installed in North Charleston for this second showing. The selected artists include: Amanda Downey, Courtney Guider, Jodi Herring, Hirona Matsuda, Michael Newman, Bethany Pope, Michelle Repici, Alexa Stephens, Alison Watkins, and Takeya White. This exhibition was sponsored by the I'On Trust.
The City of North Charleston proudly presents
the first annual, national North Charleston Outdoor Sculpture
Competition and Exhibition, which will take place at Riverfront
Park in North Charleston.
Set along the Cooper River, visitors enjoy ten acres of walking
paths, a fishing pier, an oversized sandbox and children's play
fountain. A magnificent contemporary Performance Pavilion and
expansive lawn provide a wonderful outdoor setting for small and
large scale events. Future park additions include the Naval Base
Memorial, boardwalks and a pedestrian bridge across Noisette Creek
to the future Hunley Submarine Museum. The historic site is centered
in the Noisette District, the largest urban redevelopment project
ever undertaken in the United States.
Carla Hanzal, a Curator for the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte,
NC, was the juror for this first exhibition and competition. The
exhibition dates are May 13, 2006 through Mar. 30, 2007.
