Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Rebecca Jonas
Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, is proud
to present Full Circle, an exhibit featuring the work of
local artist and UVA member Rebecca Jonas, at the UVA Gallery,
from May 3 - 26, 2006.
While earning a BA in Education from the University of Wisconsin,
Jonas was fascinated by art and its diversity. She later moved
to South Carolina to teach art. Now, as a full time artist, Jonas
explores many different media combinations. "Taking what
is known and expanding the application is what creative thinking
is all about," said Jonas.
Jonas' newest direction is Photo Nouveau: a term she coined to refer to the process of manipulating a photo or an existing piece of her work to create a new composition. "Photo Nouveau evolved from an experiment of wrapping myself in fabric and setting the timer on my digital camera," said Jonas. "I captured several very interesting images, and though the photo quality was extremely poor, the possibilities were endless," adding. "By moving pixels as I would grains of chalk, I found a media which could take my pastel style in many new directions."
In this show Jonas will be displaying rarely-seen works from her archives in addition to more recent works, hoping to show by this juxtaposition the "full circle" she sees in the directions she is currently exploring.
Jonas is a member of Upstate Visual Arts, Greenville's only non-profit organization dedicated solely to assisting local visual artists. She enjoys promoting other local artists by serving on various committees within Upstate Visual Arts and the Metropolitan Arts Council.
The UVA Gallery and Gift Shop serve to further the mission of Upstate Visual Arts: to elevate the stature of visual art and educate the public to its significance. UVA also exhibits at the Greenville Commerce Club.
