University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Offers Exhibit on Sudan

The University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum and department of African American Studies, in Columbia, SC, are presenting an exhibit of photography through May 27, 2006, that portrays the land and the people of the Sudan.

The photographs are by Michael Freeman, a principal photographer for Smithsonian Magazine, and are from the book, Sudan: The Land and the People.

The exhibit shows a cross section of life in Africa's largest and most culturally diverse nation, portraying Muslims, Christians and followers of traditional Sudanese religions. Former President Jimmy Carter writes in the book's foreword that Freeman's camera captures "the essential humanity of the Sudan."

Sudan: The Land and the People is a nationally traveling exhibition from the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC.
